TECHNOLOGY'S PERKS
Technology is how Douglas Billingsley, a 23-year-old Rutgers senior, eventually built a $10,000-a-year business performing magic shows for private parties. But without any contacts, Billingsley, of Burlington Township, said he learned through trial and error. He spent the first few years letting the business grow through word of mouth and occasional flyers.
Then, last year, he decided to use technology to aggressively expand his reach. He created a website to advertise his services and attract followers. With the help of weekly electronic newsletters, he has increased his client base to 150 people.
"When I first started out, my contact list was zero," he said. "Once I get them signed up, I got them hooked."
